Welcome to The Black Bear Project!
Black Bear Project is a 501 (C) 3, non-profit organization that provides specialized residential housing to male youth, aged seventeen and a half through twenty-two, who have aged out of the foster care system.
Our Mission
To enrich the lives of at-risk young adults disconnected from family support by providing a supportive living environment, life skills training, employment opportunities and positive role models.
The Basics
The Black Bear Project consists of two vital branches: our home at the Black Bear House and our employment opportunities offered at the Z-Pie restaurant in the revamped West Street Market in downtown Reno. The Black Bear House is a four bedroom, three bath home located in a wholesome residential area and capable of housing up to six residents at a time. There is a common living area in addition to a life skills training area and an office in the home, giving residents access to supportive staff members throughout the day. Residents have easy access to public transportation within walking distance: the nearest bus line is less than two blocks from the house.
Residents of the Black Bear House are provided with a spacious bedroom, which is shared with one other person, in addition to healthy meals, a cell phone, internet access, service coordination and recreational opportunities. We also offer the opportunity to gain work experience and begin building financial savvy and a résumé by working at our Z-Pie restaurant. Most importantly, they are offered the opportunity to begin the transition process from youth to adult in an environment that honors and promotes their independence while providing the much needed support and nurturing necessary for positive development.
